The Solar PV Design Engineer provides engineering support throughout the proposal, design and construction phase of projects. This includes designing Solar PV systems, preparation of 1‐line diagrams, array layouts, equipment specification, and construction documentation. Layouts to be performed in AutoCAD. Establish Solar PV basis of design including module selection, string sizing, ground coverage ratio, inverter selection, inverter power factor requirements, inverter loading ratio, and cable sizing. Leads the Solar PV Design Team to ensure due diligence and requirements completed to facilitate project completion.

What You'll Do

  • Establish Solar PV basis of design including module selection, string sizing, ground coverage ratio, inverter selection, inverter power factor requirements, inverter loading ratio, and cable sizing.
  • Design solar PV systems, including 1‐line diagrams and array layouts.
  • Demonstrate structural, mechanical, and electrical design skills with the ability to generate accurate, highly detailed construction drawings and documents using AutoCAD.
  • Closely collaborate with project development teams in the design, and development of Solar PV systems.
  • Coordinate with Construction staff to complete designs and project plan sets prior to deadlines in order to efficiently schedule Construction activities.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices to tasks, particularly when analyzing current technical tools, and evaluating tools.
  • Perform energy simulation analysis using PVsyst to help Finance and Business Development team acquire new projects.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and 3rd‐party personnel to facilitate design and development of Solar PV systems.
  • Assist in creating 30% and IFC PVsyst reports.
  • Hire, train, and develop Electrical Engineering staff.
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement and problem solving.
  • Have a high degree of familiarity with the National Electric Code regarding PV Solar Systems.

Our Ideal Candidate Has

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Three years minimum of engineering experience performing civil design and development of solar projects in a fast‐paced environment.
  • PE preferred, EIT required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Two years minimum of supervisory experience in related field.
  • Proficiency with reading blueprints, plans, specs, contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders.
  • Is detail‐oriented and efficient in problem solving.
  • An interest in renewable energy development and design.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.

Bonus Points

  • Licensed P.E. in the state of MN, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Understanding of structural and mechanical design process.
  • Willingness and ability to clearly define objectives, exercise sound technical judgment, take on increasing levels of responsibility and to thrive in a small, flexible, and dynamic work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate in a positive manner with project managers, other engineering/design team members, management and installation contractors to foster an environment of superior coordination.
  • Good problem solving and critical thinking abilities and a proactive work ethic. Must take accountability of own body of work, closing each project by design completion efficiently, while maintaining accuracy and strict attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to apply innovative and creative skills to problem solving.
  • Experience with on‐site troubleshooting of technology and automation of manual processes.
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code is preferred.
